TRUE STORY. One of the few things I credit in finally dating my boyfriend is making cake balls. And perhaps Molly Moon’s and pho as our first one on one hangouts had to do with consuming food.

It doesn’t matter to me if you’re fat or ugly. I’m in love with the being that is Makino.
Tsukasa is definitely…questionable…all things considered (though I do love him terribly, but that’s a different discussion), but I truly think he’d love Tsukushi no matter what, especially since he fell for her spirit and attitude and encourages her to retain that. I feel like he’s one of the few characters that’s actually being honest when they say such a thing.
He makes me all squishy when he talks about how much he loves her, especially since it usually involves him putting his foot in his mouth and I like seeing the strong male character be awkward around their love interest for a change.

I’ve been reading through MoonKitty.net’s “manga mistakes” section since I was thinking about writing some comparison changes between the Mixx translation and new release, but…half of those mistakes I wouldn’t even label as such (at least, not given on the information the reviewer provided). I agree that some phrases are more suitable than others, but when the reviewer admits they just have a particular bias against a phrase being used and not about the actual appropriateness of the phrase…
Anyone else have suggestions on where to read about mistakes with the new release? That has a decent explanation as to why certain portions of the translation are problematic and inappropriate? I’d really appreciate it!

See, I do want somebody to be the Zuko of this series and put a human face on the Equalists. But I do not want it to be Asami, for so many reasons. Because it would be all too predictable, and typical of a series that focuses on a female protagonist, to demonize every other female her age, especially the romantic rival. I really want Asami and Korra to wind up as best friends and defy all of the bullshit baggage that hangs off of the trope that Asami embodies. And I want to see the new Team Avatar include some non-bender representation, since that is so important to this series.
I don’t want Asami to be Zuko, either, I don’t want her to back down or apologize for believing in the ideals of the Equaltists because I think they have a point. Unlike the Fire Nation that were all out to oppress the entire world, the Equaltists want equality, so to speak. You can argue about how much or how little they would oppress benders, especially since they’re forcibly taking away bending (though largely from people who misuse their abilities), but the core of what they stand for is for benders and non-benders to be equal. If Asami believes and fights for this, I don’t want her to apologize for it.
I don’t think making Asami the “enemy” is demonizing depending on how she’s portrayed. I really don’t have a problem with it being “cliche” or “predictable” simply because I want to see more women as Big Bads. I don’t necessarily agree with Amon, but he is smart, strong, and charismatic character and it wouldn’t be So Bad if he ended up being a woman.
And I really don’t see how it’s any less cliche or predictable to have the rival turn into BBFs with the protagonist.
The only downside I see to Asami or any other woman character being Amon is the assertion that in order to be taken seriously as a threat and gain a following, they had to disguise themselves as a man. But for me, personally, I care more about what makes sense for the character rather than trying to appease or defy stereotypes.
To be honest, as long as Asami is an interesting and complete character with depth, I could really care less what trope she fits, if any.
Ha, well-stated. And you’re right, all I really want at the end of the day is for her to be an interesting character. It really is too soon to call it either way. And I trust these writers to do that.
I’m just really super turned off by the attention to the shippers, and I don’t really want there to be one more reason for the pretty girl who is not the main character to be a target for hate.
I think it’s going to be really, really interesting to see how they approach the entire issue with the Equalists. Because I agree that their message is essentially a noble one, but Amon and the way he’s going about it? I’m more inclined to see it as just a power grab. What I really wonder is how soon they are going to confront the main characters with the idea that they aren’t entirely in the right, here. And I think Asami might be integral to that either way.
I’m trying to avoid the shipping war crap with her because I loved Asami the minute she showed up, so I get what you mean. I DO like Mako and Korra together, but I thought Asami was great the minute she ran over Mako, haha!
I hope Asami is used to bring more attention to the power dynamics with bending in some way as well! I’m also excited to see her fight some more. Bending is so fun to watch, but I loved watching Ty Lee and Mai fight, as well as the Kyoshi Warriors. Plus I really enjoy how they portrayed her very powerful inner spirit. I feel like she’s the first character this season to display inner emotional strength on such a high level that you can just see it.
I could blab on about Asami forever~

People usually assume I’m daddy’s helpless little girl but I can handle myself
This could just as easily read: “Fandom usually assumes I’m a slut/useless/pretentious/prissy/anti-feminist/Equalist/Amon/Ozai Reincarnated, but they just can’t handle my awesome.”
Idk, I think it would be pretty awesome if she was an Equalist or Amon.
Not that I agree with the Equalists/Amon, but I think of characters like Azula and early Zuko, and I think if they made Asami an “enemy” she would still have a lot of depth like those two— and even better because unlike Ozai who was very clearly in the baddie group where we were all OPPRESSING PEOPLE IS BAD, WE CAN ALL GET BEHIND HOW BAD HE IS, the Equaltists don’t have that. They’re in this great WE DO BAD THINGS, BUT WE HAVE A VALID POINT area. In my mind, she’d be the one to point out that there needs to be a stronger balance between benders and non-benders. I don’t know why she’d have to be an Equalist or Amon to do that, but I’d certainly enjoy the plot~
Of course, I’d probably avoid fandom for a while if that happened since so many vocally oppose her to begin with. >.>
